Stem Cell InvestmentsStem cells in medical research have amazing potential in one day assisting the body in repairing tissue and perhaps even growing organs. Though the technology and research has not reached that potential just yet, stem cells are considered by many medical researchers to within our grasp, with more advancements in technology and years of stem cell research.StemCells, Inc. (NASDAQ: STEM) announced August 29, 2006 that it has entered into a license agreement with Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp. (TSX-V: SSS), a Canadian biotechnology company engaged in treating certain central nervous system (CNS) disorders by stimulating endogenous neural stem cells. Under the agreement, Stem Cell Therapeutics (SCT) will pay StemCells up-front and license maintenance fees, as well as milestone and royalty payments. The agreement also provides StemCells with access to SCT's intellectual property portfolio for use in drug discovery, screening and testing, and therapeutic use of cellular compositions. StemCells will pay SCT a commercially reasonable royalty to be negotiated in good faith on products developed under the license. Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) announced August 21, 2006 the presentation of new data supporting the development of TAT0002, a small molecule telomerase activator for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto. Stem cell investing is still difficult to forecast, but as an industry, it looks poised to play a vital role in medical research. Stem cell companies are making crucial breakthroughs each day, and these stem cell companies are looking to raise investor capital to continue their research.
